Treating Rosacea:  Treatment Options

Rosacea is a skin condition that many find very embarrassing. The most common symptom is flushing or a persistent redness of the face, usually resembling a sunburn or blush that won’t go away and small visible blood vessels.

There are a lot of ideas about how to treat or cure it. There is no cure, but it is possible to get it under control and make it manageable. Divine Laser &Spa can help treat rosacea by performing three different approaches:

Intense pulse light, Laser Genesis, and Microneedling.

Let’s take a look at each option: what it is and how it works for this skin condition.

Intense pulse light

Intense pulse light at Divine MedSpa is a 30 minute treatment. There will be a bright light and a light stinging sensation similar to that of a rubber band snapping against the skin of your face. This feeling dissipates quickly.  Pigmented skin will usually darken and and eventually flake off. It is safe, although not appropriate for all skin types, so it is important to find out if you are a good candidate first.

Usually, you’ll get 3 treatments, spaced approximately 4-6 weeks apart. You’ll begin to see gradual results after each treatment, as the light destroys the capillaries that contribute to redness. Intense pulse light also builds collagen, gives your skin an even tone and healthy appearance, and prevents further damage from presenting itself.

Laser Genesis

Laser genesis gently heats the upper layer of the dermis (skin) and targets discolor, reducing the appearance of acne scars and redness. It also increases collagen production, which combines with the heat to shrink pores on the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. Results tend to be subtle initially, increasing over time with the increased collagen, taking about 3-9 weeks. Most people have about four treatments, though this varies depending on your skin and individual needs.

Laser genesis is noninvasive, and many people describe it as relaxing and therapeutic. You’ll feel a gentle warming as the laser is moved over your face, approximately a half inch away from your skin. More heat is generated in dilated capillaries, which helps to reduce redness. There are no side effects other than some slight redness in sensitive skinned patients.

You’ll want to drink plenty of water and protect your skin from the sun in the days following a treatment to heighten the visible benefits of treatment.

Microneedling

Microneedling at Divine Laser & Spa naturally stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin without causing more damage. It stimulates tissue regeneration, improves acne scars, and reduces the size of pores. It can be done on any skin type. You’ll begin to notice results after a week or two, but it can take a few months to see the full benefit.

A device similar to a pen, studded with (standardly 12) fine sharp needles is slid over the skin and penetrates up to 2mm deep, prompting the skin to plump and thicken, reducing the appearance of acne scars and fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin stays intact, and the treatment can be repeated often.  Most people say it feels similar to sandpaper being moved across the skin and takes approximately 15-30 minutes to complete treatment.

You may experience some redness, bruising, or minor swelling in the first day or two after treatment, similar to a sunburn. You should protect your skin with a good sunscreen, and restore moisture with a lotion or cream containing hyaluronic acid.

Microneedling also leads to less burning, itching, heat or prickling, which means that it treats more than just the visible symptoms.

Followup skin care at home
Treatments are effective, but combining them with an at-home skin care routine will enhance the effects. Proper skin care will also help the effects last longer, and keep your skin looking healthier and more beautiful overall. There are many angles from which to treat rosacea, and when combined, you’ll have healthier skin.

Can I combine treatments?
The staff at Divine MedSpa can go over all your options, including whether or not you can combine treatments.

You’re not stuck with topical creams or oral antibiotics to treat your skin. The treatments outlined above are all effective, easy, and longterm solutions to the redness, acne, and visible blood vessels, especially when combined with an at-home skin care routine. They’ll also improve your skin’s health overall, which is something the topical creams and oral antibiotics can’t do. Rather than feeling like you’re treating a disease, you’ll walk out of treatment feeling as if you’ve just enjoyed a day at the spa. Who wouldn’t want to feel like that?
